Digital Technology 101: Demystifying Digital Technology Part 2 – Digital Organizations and High Velocity IT

In the first blog of this three-part series, Digital Technology 101: Demystifying Digital Technology Part 1, we looked at understanding various terminologies such as digital technology, IT, operational technology, the internet of things (IoT), and digitization.

In this second blog, we will focus on digital organizations, the crucial role high-velocity IT plays to enable an organization’s digital transformation, and the benefits this symbiotic relationship provides to the organization.

First of all, let’s look at what is meant by a digital organization.

What Is a Digital Organization?
A digital organization is an organization that is enabled by digital technology (DT) to do business significantly differently, or to do significantly different business. For example, a traditional taxi company will rely on digital technology for operational purposes, but when a taxi company relies on an app for bookings, the digital technology is strategic and forms a part of the business model.

For digital products and customer experiences, innovative digital investments are needed to create and/or maintain a competitive advantage – and they need to be realized quickly.

Let’s see how high velocity IT helps with this objective.

What Is High Velocity IT?
High velocity IT (HIT) is the application of digital technology for significant business enablement, where time to market, time to customer, time to change, and speed in general are crucial.

In our previous example of a taxi company that relies on an app for bookings, time is of the essence in a high-velocity environment. The app has to provide quick access to the company’s service, a well-designed process that facilitates the fast input of information, a rapid connection with a specific service provider, timely tracking of the service provider, and a secure and fast payment process.

High velocity IT aligns high-value IT-related work with high-velocity business from its conception through development and operations, to the actual realization of value. In addition to ensuring the speed of value delivery, HIT also enables fast feedback and ensures the quality of IT-related products and services continually improve.

The Benefits of Implementing High Velocity IT
The concepts related to high-velocity IT help organizations understand what they can do and which resources they can use across the life cycle of digital products to:

  • Make the right digital investments
  • Realize and deliver digital products and services quickly
  • Ensure the service consumer realizes value from the digital products and services
  • Assure conformance of activities with governance, risk, and compliance requirements

Now that we’ve identified some basic digital technology terms and explored the important relationship between digital organizations and high-velocity IT, in part three of this series, we’ll look at digital transformation and how it differs from IT transformation.
