Using Interactive Training Workshops to Scope Out Your Next Improvement Initiative

Interactive Training Workshops, sometimes referred to as business simulations, are exercises that aim to aid learning in gaining a better understanding of a specific topic (or closely related topics).  The idea behind interactive training workshops is that we grasp concepts and learning points easier and faster while in motion.  Of course, organizational change teaches us that not everyone learns by doing, so it is important that you consider offering observation roles as part of the simulation. 

That said, my favorite workshop is still the very first I learned to facilitate: ITSM In Action: Apollo 13.

Apollo 13 is an interactive training workshop geared towards giving people an understanding of Service Management and how processes and roles as well as business objectives come together.  What I really enjoy about this workshop is that it can be tailored to focus on specific ITSM processes. In each round of the iterative exercise, you review what happened with processes, roles, and activities and share ideas on how to improve things the next time around.  Interactive training workshops give us a safe environment to make mistakes…and mistakes are one of the best ways to identify improvement needs! 

I find many organizations in what I call “meeting paralysis” – several meetings occur each day regarding key areas of concern, however, making a decision and taking action are not an outcome of any!  I have used the Apollo 13 workshop to help organizations recognize real pain points with Service Management – and this enables them to set a realistic scope on their next improvement effort.  The workshop helps by bringing everyone on board within a single day – and agreement on the scope of improvement efforts tend to be realistic and measurable in a specified timeframe. 

Not all workshops have to be fully formalized…set up your own table top exercise and get creative!  Just be sure you understand the objective and DO something with the results!!
