The Enemy of Success Isn’t Failure; It’s Comfort!

Pink News Editor | October 4, 2022

In this blog, we feature Michelle Poler who is one of the exciting and inspiring keynote speakers presenting at Pink23 – our 26th International IT Service Management Conference and Exhibition.

According to Michelle (fear-facer extraordinaire!), “We know our comfort zone pretty well – we live there most of the time.” She goes on to say that before we can make changes in our life, we need to modify our perspective – and get ready to feel really uncomfortable.

Michelle believes our fears reveal what we care about the most, so each and every challenge is an opportunity to grow, hustle, and be your most authentic self – unapologetically. The founder of the Hello Fears movement, Michelle is known for her project 100 Days without Fear and is also the author of Hello, Fears: Crush Your Comfort Zone and Become Who You're Meant to Be. Her organization empowers millions to live with courage and tap into their full potential.

Michelle notes we can either live in our fear bubble or choose to live outside of it. The key is to change your perception of fear and view it as an opportunity to explore something different. She acknowledges this isn’t an easy thing to do and says we must negotiate our fears as a way to open ourselves to new experiences and change our approach to life. By doing so, we can enjoy the benefits of exploring new things, uncovering new emotions, pushing our limits, and creating memorable experiences.

So, how do we go about doing this…?

Six Steps to Conquer Your Fears

In Embracing Your Fears with Michelle Poler, she outlines her six-stage process for moving through fear:

  1. Discover stage – You realize you fear something that you may have not considered before, something out of your comfort zone.
  2. Denial stage – You make up excuses to avoid your newfound fear, that it’s not a good idea. You’re letting the fear speak for you. This is where most people stay, they forget about it and move on with their lives.
  3. Determination stage – You start to reconsider the idea, the fear, and that it may be a defining moment in your life. You start to consider taking the risk and facing that fear.
  4. ‘WTF am I doing?’ stage – You start questioning your decision to face that fear. It’s the moment you’re about to skip facing the fear and return to your comfort zone. This is the second-most settled stage in the process, where people back away from the plan after they’ve decided to face the fear.
  5. Action stage – You move past the stage of doubt and take action. This stage usually only lasts a few seconds – and you face your fear.
  6. Celebratory stage – You experience being proud of yourself. You just faced your fear, you conquered it, and achieved what you thought was impossible.

So, crush your comfort zone and become who you’re meant to be! Reach your full potential by attending the world’s premier IT service management event – now in its 26th hugely successful year…
