Highlights from the State of CIO 2022 Report: The Focus Turns to IT Fundamentals

In her article, State of the CIO, 2022: Focus Turns to IT Fundamentals, contributing writer Beth Stackpole writes that “CIOs are once again walking a tightrope between innovation and operational excellence – this time, buoyed by strong LOB alliances and a lingering pandemic glow”.

Here are some notable findings about IT leaders:

  • 85% of IT leaders surveyed devoted time to transformational responsibilities that include:
    • Modernizing infrastructure and applications (40%)
    • Aligning IT initiatives with business goals (38%)
    • Cultivating the IT/business partnership (30%)
  • Functional tasks also consumed a large part of the CIO agenda this year, according to 84% of survey respondents, with these being among the top imperatives:
    • Security management (51%)
    • Improving IT operations and systems performance (43%)
    • Controlling costs and expense management (29%)
  • Business strategy took precedence for 67% of respondents, which means they spent time on activities such as driving business innovation, developing strategy, or identifying opportunities for competitive differentiation.

The CEO’s top three priorities for IT in 2022 were to:

  • Update IT and data security to reduce corporate risk
  • Lead digital business/digital transformation initiatives
  • Strengthen IT and business collaboration

Areas of focus that ranked high on the agenda of CIOs include:

  • 46% are advancing efforts to increase operational efficiency
  • The transformation of existing business processes that includes automation and integration was a top imperative for 41% of respondents
  • Improving customer experience was key for 42% of respondents

When it comes to the business initiatives expected to drive IT investments, increasing cybersecurity protections edged out increasing operational efficiency – closely followed by improving the customer experience and transforming existing business processes:

Other noteworthy findings are:

  • 86% of CIOs say their role is becoming more digital and innovation focused
  • 84% are more involved in leading digital transformation initiatives as compared to their business counterparts
  • 76% of CIOs say it’s challenging to find the right balance between business innovation and operational excellence

This year’s survey also showed that CIOs are gaining acknowledgment for their digital and innovation contributions:

  • 79% of LOB respondents recognize the CIO role as more digital and innovation focused
  • 78% agree that the CIO plays an outsized role in leading digital transformation – far more than any of its executive counterparts
