Pink24 Spotlight: The 5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership

Pink News Editor | October 13, 2023 | 1 comments

At Pink24, the industry’s most respected annual IT service management conference, and now in its 27th hugely successful year, Jack Probst will deliver an interactive 3-hour pre-conference workshop, held on Sunday and exclusively for Executive VIP passholders, based on the best-selling book, The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations, by James Kouzes and Barry Posner.

Through a series of learning exercises, attendees will have an opportunity to examine the five principles and concepts described in the book and discuss how to apply them directly to your IT organization’s projects and processes. Jack, who holds an Ed.D degree, will provide numerous examples for each of the five elements based on his vast business experience, including roles as a senior IT leader, and over two decades as a principal consultant with Pink Elephant helping a multitude of organizations with strategic and practical subject matter expertise.

The 5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership

This blog previews the five principles covered in detail in the book and in Jack’s workshop. The authors Kouzes and Posner based these principles on extensive 30 years of research, which has involved thousands of interviews and reviewing a multitude of case studies. The research conducted revealed that leaders who consistently use all of the 5 practices described below are significantly more effective than those who use them infrequently. Furthermore, all 5 practices are needed for exemplary leadership.

  1. Model the way: Great leaders know how to create standards of excellence and set an example for others to follow. To be a credible leader you must express yourself authentically and that can only happen once you gain awareness and get clarity about your own values, which guide everything you do. Then, you must always be the role model of the behaviors you expect from others.
  2. Inspire a shared vision: Leaders should communicate a clear vision of what the future will be, and the vision is one that leaders are demonstratively passionate about. Excellent leaders know how to make the vision a reality through others who see and own the shared vision.
  3. Challenge the process: Exemplary leaders challenge the status quo and know how to search for opportunities and constantly venture outside themselves and their organizations for improvements and potential innovations. They are open to experimenting and creating a culture of taking risks.
  4. Enable others to act: Leaders know how to cultivate in others a deep sense of belonging and ownership. Excellent leaders foster collaboration and build spirited teams. They strive to create an atmosphere of trust and they strengthen others by giving them confidence and developing their competencies, making each person feel capable.
  5. Encourage the heart: The road to success can often be long and arduous. Exemplary leaders inspire and support others through genuine care and appreciation including visible leadership, recognizing contributions, and celebrating both small and big wins.
