Business Process Management and How It Supports integratedITSM™
During the introduction module for Pink Elephant’s integrated ITSM™ Essentials certification course, there is an overview of the business concepts of systems thinking, systems theory, process design, and business process management (BPM) that includes an explanation regarding the significance of all these areas to integratedITSM™.
This blog focuses on the relevance of BPM.
What is Business Process Management?
Business process management (BPM) is a business discipline. It supports the idea that work and activities can be viewed as processes – a series of steps that are created, analyzed, and continually improved upon. The first recorded idea for BPM dates back to Frederick Taylor, who in 1911 published, The Principles of Scientific Management, in which he details how productivity can be greatly improved by applying what he called, Scientific Management Theory.
Over the years, Taylor’s ideas, which have roots in manufacturing, have been built upon by many other academics and other methodologies (including Lean Kaizen) and eventually taken from the manufacturing world into ‘service’ organizations.
Today, businesses of all sizes are realizing the need to continually assess the processes they use so they can fulfill their business strategies and goals.
ITSM & Business Process Management – Two Sides of the Same Coin
All IT Service Management (ITSM) frameworks, and process management in general, has its roots in BPM.
Gartner defines business process management as “a discipline that uses various methods to discover, model, analyze, measure, improve, and optimize business processes. A business process coordinates the behavior of people, systems, information, and things to produce business outcomes in support of a business strategy. Processes can be structured and repeatable, or unstructured and variable. Though not required, technologies are often used with BPM. BPM is key to aligning IT/OT (operational technology) investments to business strategy.”
ITSM can also be defined in a similar way: a structured approach to improving the processes IT organizations use to get work done, serve their customers/users, and generate business value. An ITSM ‘business’ process is an activity or set of activities that helps accomplish an IT organization's goals. ITSM uses various methods to improve a process by analyzing it, modeling how it works in different scenarios, implementing changes, monitoring the new and existing processes, and continuously improving its ability to drive desired business outcomes and results.
