The Business of Body Language

Pink News Editor | April 29, 2019 Leadership

Having the ability to read and understand body language holds several benefits and can improve your standing in both personal and professional relationships.

Think about these everyday life type of questions for a moment:

  • Do you know when someone is lying? Do you know what gesture is a dead give-away?
  • Do you know if the person you are talking to is truly interested in what you’re saying?
  • If you’re on a date, do you know if the person you’re with is really into you?
  • Do you know the key differences between how men and women express themselves?
  • Do you know why women tend to nod their heads a lot when they are listening to someone talk?
  • Do you know why women can walk into a room and have a gut feeling who likes whom and who doesn’t, simply by unconsciously reading people’s body language?

All good questions, right?  But, most of us don’t know the answers!

The fact is, many of us don’t know how to read body language, but here’s some good news….Allan Pease, human behavior expert and best-selling author can help! He’ll answers these questions and more at Pink20.

Take hand gestures, for example – Pease says a little bit of understanding goes a long way. In one of his studies he found that when speaking to an audience the presenter’s palm orientation dramatically affects their perception – palms down implies authority; palms up implies a trustworthy and friendly demeanor. He also found that no one likes a finger-pointer and by forming a bridge (touching fingertips together) the speaker promotes confidence and poise.

Your handshake is just as telling and says a lot about who you are. Few greeting gestures are as uninviting as the dead-fish handshake. Throw in a bit of clamminess and you’re ripe to win top award for weak character and low self-esteem. To show strength of character, look the person in the eye, use a firm grim, use your speech in conjunction with the handshake, and be careful not to rush, while at the same time don’t shake their hand too much.

Those who master the art of using and interpreting body language are said to be more respected, likeable, and authoritative than others around them. Even a little bit of self-training will lead to a shift in how you appear to others and how they interact with you.

I know what you’re asking - how do I get to see this amazing expert, Allan Pease?
